Course Description - Safety, job performance, and efficiency are at the root of this training program. EMS personnel on bikes can frequently respond more quickly than those in motor vehicles, especially in congested urban areas and in crowds. They are also effective in search-and-rescue operations, such as those resulting from natural disasters. Students learn basic and emergency bike-handling skills, riding single and in pairs under various traffic conditions, ways to effectively and safely pack equipment, techniques designed to safely handle EMS scenes, and personal safety techniques. This course is a must for EMS and SAR personnel seeking to develop and improve their riding skills and their use of the bike on the job.

Instructor(s): This course will be taught by EMS Captain Kyle Roodberg EMSCI196. Kyle has 20 plus years experience as a bike team medic at Denver Health. He currently coordinates the Denver Paramedic bike team. His experience includes bike team operations at World Youth Day in 1993, Summit of the Eight in 1997 and the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Prerequisites: Applicants must be EMS or SAR personnel currently assigned to bike patrol, officers applying to become members of a bike unit, or members of a department considering use of the bicycle.

Tactical Combat Casualty Care

The only standard of care endorsed by both the American College of Surgeons and the
National Association of EMT's for casualty management in tactical environments.

Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) is for those personnel that may be involved in situations in which special tactics and/or immediate trauma management is required, immediate transport is not available, or austere environmental conditions exist. This course was originally developed for the military and has since been recognized as having important applications to civilians in tactical situations.  TCCC benefits everyone involved in the medical support of tactical response; from the first responder with no previous medical training, to the police officer responding to a tactical situation, to the most experienced emergency medicine provider.  The program offers a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises in the treatment of the trauma patient with particular emphasis on penetrating, blunt, and blast injuries in conjunction with environmental and situational concerns. The emphasis is on recognition of those injuries that pose an immediate life threat and the interventions necessary to address them.  TCCC is designed to deliver the training to both operators and medical providers, either jointly or separately, allowing all responders to participate in the course simultaneously at a level of training, skill and interest for all course participants.
